Germanistische Mitteilungen was founded in 1975 and is the only specialist German Studies journal in Belgium. Expanding its horizon to position itself firmly in German Studies on an international scale, Germanistische Mitteilungen publishes articles and book reviews on the language, literature and culture of the German-speaking countries, as well as on German as a Foreign Language.

Edited under the auspices of the Belgian Association of Lecturers and Teachers of German (BGDV), Germanistische Mitteilungen is published in German, alternating loosely between themed issued and issues on mixed topics. Submissions are subject to anonymous peer review by an international board of advisors.
